‘Obsessions of a painter’: the exhibition highlights the existential subjects of French artist Sam Szafran

The Musée de l’Orangerie invites visitors to discover the figurative, poetic, and captivating oeuvre of Sam Szafran, three years after his death in 2019.

Born into a Jewish-Polish family, Szafran had a difficult childhood, marked by the Second World War. This experience led him to prefer the solitude of his studio, where he reflected on his own existence and his inner state of mind. The exhibition highlights the existential subjects of this singular artist: the workshops, stairs and foliage which made up his immediate environment. Sam Szafran painted enclosed and self-contained places, where he distorted and deconstructed perspective to create multiple hypnotizing and fragmented visions.
