Intriguing works with dark and vivid colours … Discover the art of Georg Baselitz at the Centre Pompidou until 7 March 2021

In this new retrospective, the Centre Pompidou celebrates the works of the German artist Georg Baselitz. From his first paintings in 1956 to the present day, 60 years of art combine all the complexity of the post-war period with two themes that are dear to him: history and memory.

Known for his dark works, with tormented souls or evanescent figures on brightly coloured backgrounds, inspired by the discovery of the horrors committed by the Nazi regime, Baselitz also stands out by representing the world turned upside down.

This unclassifiable German artist, greatly inspired by the African art he collects, wavers between German neo-expressionism and primitivism, but remains certainly modern.
