Historical snapshot
In 1861, at the request of Napoleon III, Charles Garnier undertook the construction of a ‘new opera house’ in the Haussmann Paris of the end of the Second Empire. Inaugurated during the Third Republic on 5 January 1875, the building fascinated contemporaries with its richness, eclecticism and the audacity of its architecture and decoration, imagined by the architect.
