Of Cretan origin, Domenico Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco, first spent time in Venice before continuing his career as an artist in Spain where he became known for his innovative style.

Taking inspiration from tradition and modernity, the artist was the last great master of the Renaissance and the first great painter of the Golden Age. In his painting of icons, he was inspired by Byzantine art to create religious compositions and then Venetian art before creating major works, influenced by Titian, Tintoretto and Michelangelo.

The 70 or so masterpieces (major compositions, sketches and sculptures) gathered at the Grand Palais provide an impressive monographic retrospective of an artist who came to be recognized as a genius and whose works were only rediscovered during the 19th century. An opportunity to admire one of the artist’s major paintings, the restored Assumption of the Virgin, on loan from the Art Institute of Chicago, which has not returned to Europe since 1906.
