Chagall, Lissitzky, Malevich – The Russian Avant-Garde in Vitebsk (1918-1922)

To celebrate the centenary of Marc Chagall’s nomination to the post of ‘commissaire des beaux-arts’ in Vitebsk, the Centre Pompidou is paying tribute to him, and to two other iconic figures of the Russian avant-garde: El Lissitzky and Kazimir Malevich.

The exhibition is mainly devoted to these three headliners, but the Pompidou Centre is looking at this period through an even wider lens by also showing the works of some of the teachers and students of the Vitebsk Higher Institute of Art. Among the better-known are Ilya Chashnik, Vera Ermolaeva, and Nikolai Suetin.

Some 250 original works and documents from Vitebsk, Moscow, St Petersburg, and Minsk will be displayed for visitors to the Pompidou Centre and reflect the Russian avant-garde’s rise to prominence in the post-revolutionary years.
