The Grand Palais is presenting the exhibition "Kupka, pioneer of Abstraction" from 21 March to 30 July 2018 .

František Kupka (1871-1957) was one of the pioneers of abstract art, characterized by colours, shapes, and movements. Born in Bohemia, a historic region of the Czech Republic, this artist’s work is comes to the Grand Palais for a four-month exhibition.

The retrospective begins at the end of the 19th century, when Kupka demonstrated his attachment to symbolism and completed his first works, such as Quam ad causam sumus (1895) and Meditation (1899). In the early 20th century, he turned his attention to history and bibliophiles. He used his passion for science to create purely pictorial artwork that bore no resemblance to the surrounding environment, and which was to turn him into a master of abstract art.

A selection of 300 paintings, prints, drawings, books, and documents is on display for visitors at the Grand Palais to trace the life of this artist who revolutionized abstract art through his use of colour and shape in his works.
